Silent Hill 2 is a wildly cerebic trip through the psyche of James Sunderland, a widower mourning the particularly devastating loss of his wife to an unspecified disease. The guilt James feels over her passing leads him to follow a letter supposedly from his late Mary to Silent Hill, where they vacationed once when things were going good. Upon reaching Silent Hill, James doesn't find his wife, but he does find— well, Silent Hill. Strangely, he also finds a mysterious woman who looks like Mary with one particularly glaring difference: She's not Mary. She's Maria.

Selfish, desperate, and hungry for autonomy, Maria is less a human being of her own and more of a ghost trapped within the plan Silent Hill has for James. Her personhood depends on him, and it sits in her spirit like stones in her pocket. This heaviness makes her prone to dark thoughts, mood swings, and callous, seemingly accidental, comments. Despite this, her character bio describes her as "cheerful", and she seems to believe in the best of people who aren't James, going out of her way to try and see Ernest off despite the red flags. At her most vulnerable, Maria is seen in Born from a Wish saying she just wants to see another person, and hopes for a way out of Silent Hill.

Maybe she is the spirit of Maria given manifest through anger, or perhaps she's a transformed sex worker forced to embody the anger of a dead woman. She'll be whatever you want her to be.

Shipping Maria is manipulative by need and errs closer to toxicity in relationships than she does wholesomeness. She could and can be sweet and caring, going out of her way for others, but her loneliness, anger, and everything else makes it messy. I love mess, so you're welcome to try. I play Maria as bisexual and I'm open to F/M, F/F and F/NB with her. I do ship her with James and prefer their relationship to be a co-dependent disaster based entirely on manipulation and gaslighting. So, you know. I'm cool with working with assumed cr provided your character is over the age of eighteen.

Fighting Yes. She can use a gun (revolvers are her weapon of choice!) and defend herself, but is a normal human being in terms of skill.

Killing Preference for James to be audience if possible. Jokes aside: Yes, in the appropriate memes. She'll be back, anyway. Just please plot it out with me beforehand so we can make sure it's not a slog lmao.

Telepathy/Magic Y, if your character and canon lean into that. Your character is free to detect that Maria is a construct of Silent Hill's own making for the sole reason of punishing James Sunderland, if you want.

First impressions.

Visual. Box blonde with the tips dyed pink, Maria stands at around 5'8" with a butterfly tattoo on her hip and her hair cropped to a bob. Her eyes are pale blue, nearly pallid in their lightness, and she keeps her bangs side-swept. She wears make up, enough to be apparent, and favors red stained lips over sharp pops of color. She bears a thin frame with womanly curves, and a teasing smile.

Fashion. Maria favors bad 90's fashion, opting for deep pinks and reds to accentuate her femininity. Despite enjoying clothes that show her curves, she opts for practical boots over shoes like strappy heels.

Demeanor. Flirtatious in a callous manner, Maria gives off the impression of mystery and someone who knows more than you but doesn't divulge. You're just as likely to see how remarkably clingy and needy she is, however, since the see-saw of her mood is always going.

Aural. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn gives Maria a medium to higher toned voice with a teasing tilt to it— unless she's up to something, at least. She has a standard Californian North American accent.
